Using the tools of educational drama, a form of theatrical art with a purely pedagogical character, my aim is to encourage the students to express themselves and develop the skillset that will enable them to encounter situations and manage their experiences with sensibility, confidence and empathy. Through drama my intention is to give young people the opportunity to discover the world and challenge their perception of themselves and their surroundings in a dynamic and interactive environment. This is a collective process that requires the emotional and mental involvement of the participants as well as the capacity to reflect and it aims at learning by understanding ourselves and the world around us.
Educational drama is also an important means of stimulating creativity in problem solving. Dramatic exploration can provide students with an outlet for emotions, thoughts and behaviours. A student can, even briefly, become another, explore a new role, try out and experiment with various personal choices and solutions to the very real problems of their own life. This happens in a safe and creative environment, where actions and consequences can be experienced, examined and discussed without the dangers that such experimentation would lead to in the outside world. In this sense drama can play a key role in the development of the student as an individual as well as a member of a social group.
